Privacy Week – Protecting children’s data in the educational context

dataprivacy scaled

The digital environment shapes children’s lives in a variety of ways, creating opportunities and risks within their human rights. Some digital tools allow you to connect school communities outside the classroom, others provide ways to share educational content or offer vital alternative means and modes of education through assisted technology and enhanced communications.

It was in this context that the Advisory Committee of the Convention on the Protection of Persons on the Automated Processing of Personal Data adopted some guidelines on the protection of children’s data in the educational context.

These guidelines aim to support organisations and individuals in the context of education to respect, protect and enforce children’s data protection rights in the digital environment and have been created taking into account the fundamental principles of children’s rights in an educational environment:

Some numbers to retain:

  • the best interest of the child
  • the evolutionary abilities of the child
  • the right to be heard

This document makes recommendations not only to industry, but also to legislators and data processing officers to apply the principles of privacy and data protection in the educational context in which digital technologies proliferate.
