The request for the assignment of the social security identification number (NISS) is made electronically, and it is not necessary to travel to one of the Social Security Services.
During the term of the COVID-19 contingency solution, the NISS application for foreign citizens wishing to engage in economic activity on behalf of another must be made by the employer, or by their representatives through the means of proof available in the Direct Social Security service, choosing the subject “NISS at the Time – Employer Request”.
Upon response from Social Security, the employer must communicate the admission of the foreign worker through the Direct Social Security service.
Regarding the allocation of NISS at the time to foreign citizens registered as Self-Employed – all documentation must be scanned and sent to the email address ISS-Pedido-NISS@seg-social.pt.
Authenticated documents may, in this period, be delivered using a simple copy.
